French copperplate-engraved map of the Gulf of Mexico by Joseph de La Porte titled "Golfe du Mexique Assujetti aux Observations Astronomiques," 1779, hand colored. 9-1/2" x 8" (image size 8-5/8" x 6-3/4"). Cartographer Joseph de la Porte (1714-1779) was an 18th-century French priest, literary critic, poet and playwright. A prolific author, Abbot de la Porte also wrote a large number of books and compilations. Lightly hand colored and on fine period handmade laid paper, foxing around the edges not impairing the image and centerfold as issued.
