French copperplate-engraved map of Vera Cruz (Mexico) by Jacques Nicolas Bellin titled "Plan de la Rade et Ville de la Vera-Cruz" or "Map of the Harbor and City of Vera Cruz," 1754, hand colored. 10" x 7" (image size 8-1/4" x 6"). One of the maps provided by J. N. Bellin for inclusion in L'Abbe Prevost's 1757 Histoire Generale des Voyages. The city of Vera Cruz was founded by Hernan Cortes in 1519 and was a pivotal city for the Spanish and their treasure fleets as well as the objective of more than one pirate attacks. In 1721 at age 18, Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was appointed chief cartographer to the French Navy and in 1741, he was named official hydrographer to the French king. Brightly hand colored and on fine period handmade laid paper, a margin repair on left side outside image area.
