France, large, matte-proof, silvered-bronze medal, dated 1794 (struck in Paris in 1988), Abolition of Slavery / Bicentennial of the French Revolution, by J.C. Dieudonne, PCGS SP64, finest and only example in PCGS census. 77mm. Obverse with French Assembly scene above exergue ABOLITION DE L'ESCLAVAGE / 4 FEVRIER 1794, engraver's name on exergue line; reverse with BICENTENAIRE / DE LA / REVOLUTION / FRANCAISE; smooth edge stamped with CORNE BR 1988. This attractively engraved piece commemorates the 1794 French Government decree abolishing slavery in its colonies (reversed by Napoleon eight years later), while also commemorating the bicentennial of the French Revolution that began in 1789, all surfaces in bright white matte silver, no marks or flaws except for a small copper spot near 2 o'clock on obverse.
