Framed set of three Andrea Doria banknotes with certificate: USA series 1935E silver certificate; Italian 1,000 and 100 lira. After Gimbel's recovery of the Andrea Doria safe in 1981, its contents of Italian lire and US silver certificates were professionally conserved and made available for sale. However, a select group of notes were assembled into unique framed sets and were given to universities and museums for display. Over the years, a few of these rare sets have entered the market; this is the first example we have handled. This framed set consists of (from top to bottom): a US $1 silver certificate, series 1935E, serial U92216834H; an Italian 100 lire, 14-8-1947, serial N165 017090; and an Italian 100 lire, date and serial number not visible (presumed 1947-dated). The silver certificate and 1000 lire are high grade and have only minimal edge damage and staining; the 100 lire is fairly seaworn. Additional shipping costs will apply to this item; please contact us in advance for a shipping quote. With The Doria Project certificate mounted on the back of the frame. Recovered from: Andrea Doria, sunk in 1956 off Nantucket, Massachusetts
