FRANCE, large bronze medal, no date (1907), French Antarctic polar expedition of J.B. Charcot 1904-7. 176.18 grams. 68 mm. Obverse: high relief bust of Charcot facing right, J.B. CHARCOT above; Reverse: Charcot's ship at sea, EXPÉDITIONS POLAIRES FRANÇAISES above, POURQUOI PAS? (the name of his ship) below, EM LINDAUER at right; Edge: plain with BRONZE stamped at base. Nice Mint State example of this very high relief medal honoring J.B. Charcot (1867-1936), a famous French doctor, scientist, and polar explorer. He died in the sinking of the Pourquoi Pas? off Iceland in 1936.
