English map of "St. Louis" (Haiti) and "St. Jago" (Santiago, Cuba), dated 1748, hand colored. 11-1/4" x 8-1/4" (image 7-1/4" x 4-1/4"). Two maps in one, the top one entitled "PLAN of the Town, Fort and Harbour of St. Louis in the Island of St. Domingo, taken by Admiral KNOWLES, March 8, 1747-8" and the bottom one entitled "A plan of the town and bay of St. Jago, in the Isle of Cuba." Regarding the top map, the Battle of Saint-Louis-du-Sud or the Battle of Port Louis was a battle fought in the Austrian War of Succession on March 22, 1748 in the French Caribbean colony of Saint Domingue (now the Republic of Haiti). A British squadron under the command of Admiral Charles Knowles attacked and destroyed a large French fort under command of French governor Etienne Cochard de Chastenoye. Regarding the bottom map, St. Jago, better known as Santiago de Cuba, remains the second most important city on the island of Cuba after Havana.
