Encrusted brass rapier handle and guard, ex-Leimuiden (1770). 438 grams, 4-1/2" x 3-1/4" x 2-3/4". Darkly toned conglomeration of rock and sediment solidified to a brass sword handle and guard, an attractive display piece from the East Indiaman frigate Leimuiden which wrecked off Boa Vista, Cape Verde Islands in 1770. While most of the crew survived, the ship and cargo did not. From the Leimuiden (1770), with certificate, and pedigreed to the Christie's Amsterdam auction of September 12, 2000 (lot 55).
