ESSEQUIBO & DEMERARY, struck in London, 1 guilder, George III, 1816, rare, NGC MS 65, finest known in NGC census. Prid-11; KM-13. Superb Gem with brilliant cartwheel luster and sharp full details (particularly in the laureate portrait), faint incipient toning on rims, light mark to right of denomination but still clearly choice and in fact the sole finest of currently fourteen entries in the NGC census. This single-date type with reverse legend of COLONY OF DEMERARY & ESSEQUIBO was this area's second silver issue by the British, who took control after the Dutch (see previous lot). The recorded mintage was 34,000 pieces.
