Dutch copperplate-engraved map of the northern Caribbean entitled "Jonathan Dickensons Ramspoedige Reystogt van Jamaika na Pensylvania nagespoord" (Leyden), by Pieter van der Aa, undated (1706), very rare, hand colored, matted and framed. 20" x 18". Professionally and beautifully matted and framed, a hand-colored sideways engraving of Florida and the Eastern Seaboard, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. This map accompanied a 1707 Dutch version of Jonathan Dickinson's journal. Historians and South Floridians should recognize the saga of Jonathan Dickinson, a Jamaican merchant on his way to a new life in Philadelphia with his family in 1696, after the great Port Royal earthquake of 1692 left them in ruins, who ended up shipwrecked off Jupiter Island on the southeast coast of Florida in 1696 and held captive by the Jobe (Hobe) natives before escaping to St. Augustine up the coast, his name now attached to South Florida's largest state park, in the vicinity of Hobe Sound.
