Dress sword and scabbard from Brazil for Heinrich Halfeld, Captain of Engineering in Minas Gerais, dated 1856. 1081 grams total. 39" long. Heinrich Halfeld (1797-1873), whose name appears on the blade of this ceremonial sword along with the date 1856, was a German engineer who was responsible for planning development in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He was named Engineer of the Province of Minas Gerais in 1836, while he lived in its capital, Vila Rica (as it was named then). He oversaw the building of the main road from Vila Rica to the Province of Rio de Janeiro and in the process founded the city of Juiz de Fora. In 1842 he became Captain of Engineering and took part in the victory of Imperial troops in the Battle of Santa Luzia, for which he was awarded the Order of the Rose. The sword itself still has its original leather straps and ornamentations affixed to loops and hilt, completely intact, the sheath having preserved the blade in pristine condition.
