De Munt der Graaven van Holland [The Coins of the Counts of Holland], by Kornelis Van Alkemade, 1700. 12¾" x 8¼". An important work of early coin drawings, particularly useful to collectors of colonial Santo Domingo coinage as it contains a plate drawing of the extremely rare 10 reales coin of Charles-Joanna, a redrawing from an earlier work by Plantin and Parijs in 1576. According to John Kleeberg in his paper "The 10 Reales of Santo Domingo," the Plantin and Parijs drawing lends credence to the existence of the coin as a genuine product of the Santo Domingo Mint. As Kleeberg notes, Alkemade's purpose was to publish a book about gold and silver medals (and coins) of the counts of Holland, so he included the 10 reales of Santo Domingo because it had been issued under the Spanish rulers Charles I and (his mother) Joanna, with Charles also being a Count of Holland. Fine, (24) 192pp. (8), worn leather hardcover binding.
