DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Santo Domingo, copper provisional 1/4 real, Ferdinand VII, no date (1815), struck over a Maracaibo, Venezuela, copper 1 real of 1813, NGC VF details / environmental damage. KM-2; Cal-120. Bold details but with darkly oxidized surfaces. According to the late researcher Luis Ponte, archival documents show that 4,987 pounds of Maracaibo copper 1R were exported to Santo Domingo on January 15, 1815, and overstruck with this design for circulation as 1/4 real; in some rare cases parts of the host coin can still be discerned, namely a large M and a crude bust of Ferdinand VII (neither of which is visible on this example), the same design as for the 1/2 real (KM-3) but larger.
