DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Santo Domingo, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, assayer F to left, denomination o-IIII to right, mintmark P to left and S to right, very rare, PCGS VF details / saltwater damage, finest and only example in PCGS census, ex-Rudman (stated on label), Calicó Plate (2008). Downing-Rudman-4R.12; S-SD1; Cal-140; KM-32 var. 12.43 grams. One of only five known of this type, struck on a broad flan with full legends (king and queen stated on both sides, followed by REGIS on the pillars side and R on the shield side) bearing cloverleaf ornaments and all-Latin lettering, choice full pillars with mintmark P-S, also with strong assayer F and denomination on shield side (proper castles and lions) despite some corrosion on that side, deeply toned all over, with hairline edge crack.

As a group, Santo Domingo coins minted under Charles and Joanna are the rarest coins from the Spanish Colonial New World mints, probably because the mint operated for a only short period of time, from 1542 to 1552. Their design is similar to the coins struck at the Mexico City mint, which began slightly earlier, in 1536. There was only one Santo Domingo assayer for this series, Francisco Rodríguez (assayer F). Santo Domingo coins frequently show anomalies, like transposed castles and lions, mintmark P-S instead of S-P, and misspellings in the legend (the current piece, for example, shows YOHANA for the queen's name on one side). Execution was generally crude, with some exceptions, the current piece being one.

Santo Domingo silver coins of Charles-Joanna rarely come up for sale; this is an opportunity not to be missed. Pedigreed to the Rudman Collection (Cayón auction of December 2003, lot 87), plated on page 123 of the 2008 edition of Calicó's Numismática española.
