DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, French administration, copper halfpenny token, no date (1795-1808), TVRCVPELLERIVS / HISPANNIOLA, struck by British(?) in imitation of an evasion half penny during forays against the French. Fonrobert-7621; Byrne-1156; Estrella-p. 125-6; Burzio-I, p. 252. 7.64 grams. This fascinating issue is believed to have been struck by the British, possibly in 1793-95 or 1809-14 as suggested by Burzio. The obverse features a bearded bust, presumably of Turcu Pellerius, while the reverse design is a seated figure facing the rising sun and HISPANNIOLA. Well-circulated VG with weak legends.
