Cuba, Republica de Cuba, 1000 pesos, 6-9-1869, series A, serial 435, PMG XF 40 net / margin staining, ex-EMO collection. SCWPM-60. The Ten Years' War, a fight for Cuban independence from Spain, began in 1868 under the leadership of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes whose signature appears at lower left as Presidente of the Republic of Cuba in Arms. In 1873, Cespedes was deposed from his position; Spanish troops eventually caught and killed him on Feb. 27th, 1874. This large format 1000 pesos note is the highest denomination issued for the series. It faces up nicely for its assigned grade with bold ink signatures and great centering, the margins are toned from age rather than staining as noted by the PMG comment. Pedigreed to the EMO collection (stated on the label).
