Contemporary counterfeit of a Potosi, Bolivia, cob 2 reales, 173(?)M. 5.5 grams. Determining whether a fake is contemporary (i.e., made and circulated at the time of the originals) or modern can be difficult, but when the coin comes from a shipwreck, there is no question, and that is the case here: The coin has incorrect details in the full cross and off-center pillars, and the metal appears to be somewhat low in fineness, with odd black encrustation on most of the worn but uncorroded surfaces. Recovered from: Unidentified ca.-1795 wreck off the northern coast of South America
