Collection of 8 pewter mess bowls from several different British Royal Navy ships of 1777-1820. 5 lb total, each about 2½" tall and 5" in diameter. This collection represents several decades' worth of ships in the Royal Navy, each one's name engraved on the side of the bowl (one on the bottom), usually along with an arrow mark, one also with "No. 2 Mess," but all of the same basic design with small, flared base and no other design, all in used but fundamentally undamaged condition. The ships represented here include: Ajax, Ariadne, Eden, Hero, Lion and Rodney. For clarity we should note that these are NOT later commemoratives and were actually used on each of the ships in question. With set of five typed cards giving the entire history of the HMS Lion (1777), the earliest of the ships whose bowls are included in this lot.
