Civil War-period Confederate Virginia-style Read-Parrott 10-pounder ordnance rifle shell. 3003 grams, 7-1/2" x 3". Robert P. Parrott, known to many Civil War artillery researchers and collectors for his inventions of the projectile and cannon which bear his name, created this type of projectile to be fired from the 10-pounder Parrott rifle (small cannon). This is an example of the combination of Read's wrought iron sabot and Parrott's body design. Intact with some debris stuck inside (hence the rattle you hear) and a chip to one side of lip.
