This is a unique, complete presentation set of twelve matte-finish "pruebas" from the 1995 Cuban “Pirates of the Caribbean” numismatic series, originally packaged with the unique matte-finish gold 50 pesos in lot 958 above. Only one such full matte set was ever struck, and it was first auctioned at Glendining’s (London) on February 1, 2001, as part of the International Currency Bureau Archive. The Glendining catalogue explicitly stated: “No other coins exist. All coins in this collection are unique.” Each piece bears the words PRUEBA and ESSAI flanking the denomination on reverse, struck to test their finish, relief, and metal composition.

Now, for the first time since its appearance at Glendining’s in 2001, this legendary group resurfaces on the market, a unique and important reference collection for the Cuban proof and pattern series. Pedigreed to the International Currency Bureau Archive (Glendining auction 31021 of February 2001, lot 624).
