CUBA, struck at the Gorham Mint, proof 1 peso, 1898, NGC PF 63, "top pop." KM-A8 (XM15). Mirror-field luster with sharply struck and frosty details, lovely red toning at rims, choice original surfaces, tied with three others for finest in the NGC census.

As one of the most elusive issues of the Cuban Revolutionary series, struck in 1898 by the Junta Revolucionaria Cubana in cooperation with the famed New York firm Gorham & Co., this coin's historical backdrop is as compelling as the coin itself. On February 15, 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine exploded in Havana harbor, catalyzing the Spanish-American War. The Junta quickly seized the opportunity to issue a patriotic silver peso, the first Cuban coin to bear the denomination PESO, replacing the word SOUVENIR from earlier trial strikes with UN PESO and reaffirming its intended role as a national statement rather than just a token.

According to Roberto Pesant’s classic study, only 1,000 pieces of this type were minted in March 1898. Proof examples are extraordinarily rare, and even within the already limited mintage this coin is scarcer than the 1897 Type I by emission count.

Proof Revolutionary issues from Cuba are seldom seen at all, and finding one at the very top of the census is exceedingly rare, even by Cuban standards. This coin represents the pinnacle of Cuban proof coinage available to collectors.

A superb opportunity to acquire not just a top-graded specimen, but a tangible relic of Cuba’s path to independence, a numismatic cornerstone in museum-quality preservation.
