CUBA, Havana mint, off-metal trial proof gold 100 pesos struck in brass, 1977, Lenin, very rare, NGC PF 64. Aledón-11 (for issue in gold); KM-unl (type 42 for issue in gold). Bright brassy luster overlain here and there with speckles of rainbow toning, the details frosty and sharp, second finest (behind an MS 66) of just three in the NGC census. This is a brass trial strike of the proposed 100 pesos “Lenin” type in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Socialist Revolution in Russia, the first modern gold issue attempted by Cuba's Casa de Moneda in Havana, which opened on July 18, 1977. Produced only as tests, with most destroyed, surviving pieces like this one are of the utmost rarity as prototypes for the largest Soviet-era gold denomination.
