CUBA, Havana mint, bi-metallic gold & silver proof 500 pesos, 2000, Che Guevara, with star, numbered on reverse 011, extremely rare, NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, finest known in NGC census. KM-950. 74.00 grams. 50 mm. Box: 4" x 6". Obverse with Cuban arms within oak and laurel branches, REPÚBLICA DE CUBA above and denomination below, metal weights and finenesses flanking, LÍMITE DE EMISIÓN 101 at upper left and individual serial number 011 at upper right; reverse with facing portrait of Guevara wearing his familiar starred beret, facsimile signature at lower left, date and key and star mintmark at right, HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE above and ERNESTO GUEVARA DE LA SERNA below. Sharply detailed frosted devices contrast with reflective fields, with scattered light surface marks and spots and delicate peripheral toning on the silver center. Offered as a personalized issue produced to order, with an announced limit of 101 individually numbered pieces (not a confirmed mintage). The reported NGC census comprises just four specimens, with the present PF 69 Ultra Cameo standing alone as the finest, above two PF 68 and one PF 65.

This impressive proof is arguably one of the most technically ambitious and finely executed modern products of the Casa de la Moneda de Cuba, combining an outer ring of 49 grams of .999 fine gold with a center of 25 grams of .999 fine silver, for a specified total weight of 74 grams. The mint’s technical specifications give an overall diameter of 50 mm, a silver center measuring 35 mm, and a thickness of 2.5 mm for both components.

Accompanied by its original black velvet presentation box with glass interior and original Casa de la Moneda de Cuba Certificado de Propiedad, or certificate of ownership. Dated Havana, April 1, 2002, the certificate records the mint’s sale of piece No. 011 to Domingo Suárez, identifies the special series honoring Che Guevara, and explains the issue limit and individual numbering. The matching number directly connects this specimen to its named purchaser and documents its sale by the mint in 2002, two years after the coin’s 2000 date.

The Casa de la Moneda de Cuba’s official promotional flyer titled "El arte en metal"—a color facsimile copy of which accompanies this lot—features on the front a gold upper panel with the mint’s oval emblem, a large green portrait of Guevara, and color illustrations of both sides of the coin above the caption "Una moneda personalizada" in gold script, with the design credited to the mint. The back of the flyer emphasizes the technical challenges of joining different proof-finish precious metals and explains the personalized character conferred by each specimen’s individual number. A shaded technical specifications table supplies the dimensions and component weights, followed by the mint’s emblem and Havana contact information.
An especially important offering for the advanced Cuban coin collector, combining exceptional technical execution, individual numbering, and finest-known status. Accompanied by original presentation box and original certificate issued to the first owner.
