COLOMBIA, small oval uniface silver military decoration, no date (1819), Battle of Boyacá. Ross & Stahl-Co2 var; Fonrobert-9180 (obv only). 5.50 grams. 26 mm x 22 mm. Crossed sword and branch below large cross pattée with BOYACA above, all encircled by a laurel border, per the obverse of Fonrobert-9180 (muled with an Ayacucho reverse), first example we have seen of this side, and very important as related to "Colombia's first military medals as a sovereign nation" per Ross & Stahl, whose listing for handmade 1819 originals differs slightly in showing VENCEDOR DE BOYACA. The present medal is from a new series minted in Potosí in 1825 to satisfy officers who did not receive one in 1819, but evidently this example was never awarded, as it still retains an uncut loop at top. Richly toned Mint State with multicolor-hued, lustrous surfaces, well-struck details all around, and of course very rare, one of probably only three known.
