COLOMBIA (formerly Venezuela), large silver medal, dated 1828 (struck 1829), Bolívar saved from assassination, rare. Urdaneta Braschi-I.A.12. 43.97 grams. 44 mm. Obverse with bust of Bolívar right atop a pedestal; reverse with all-seeing eye within radiant pyramid above L.D.P. / SALVO LA VIDA / DEL LIBERTADOR / SIMON BOLIVAR / LA NOCHE DEL 25. DE SEP. / DE 1828; smooth edge with loop at top. Rare and historically important medal commemorating the failed assassination attempt against Simón Bolívar on the night of September 25, 1828, the event from which the medal derives its familiar nickname, the “Septembrina.” Reportedly two examples were struck in gold and ten originally in silver, although perhaps ten to fifteen additional silver examples are now believed to exist. Long attributed to Venezuela, the medal was reassigned to Colombian manufacture following research presented by Carlos Bacalao at the 2019 NUMISCOL convention in Bogotá, including evidence that the original dies are preserved in the Museo Nacional in Bogotá. Recent research, with further articles forthcoming, also links the initials L.D.P. to a Masonic lodge, an interpretation reinforced by the all seeing eye within a radiant pyramid, rather than the traditional explanations of “La Divina Providencia” or Bolívar’s aide L.D. Palacios. Nicely toned AU with rich red and golden hues in the center ceding to dark blue around the rim on obverse, lustrous reverse with minor hairlines, the loop for suspension lightly soldered to the top.
