COLOMBIA, copper 1 décimo-sized medal, no date, Legislative Decree of October 17, 1854 / Colombian Civil War, NGC AU 50 BN, finest and only example in NGC census. Cf. Posada-138 (in silver). 27 mm. Obverse with DECRETO / LEJISLATIVO / DE 17 DE OCTUBRE / DE / 1854.; reverse with wreath encircling HONOR / A LA LEALTAD I / PATRIOTISMO / EN DEFENSA / DE LA MORAL / I DE LA / CONSTITUCION. Well struck and well preserved, with only faint traces of original color and luster, minimal small marks, rare in this grade. This medal was issued as an award to defenders of the Constitutional Government after the quelling of a coup by General José María Melo; it was to be struck in gold and silver, with copper pieces like this one considered to be trial strikes. Notably, no Colombian copper coins were being made at this time, and this copper medal is the same size as the prior copper 1 décimo of 1847-48, even with similar wreath on reverse.
