COLOMBIA, Zitará (Quibdo), 4 reales-sized proclamation medal, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1808, extremely rare, NGC VF details / plugged, ex-Isla, ex-Breogán. Restrepo-24 (p. 130); Herrera-unl (cf 92 in gold); Medina-unl (cf 407 in gold). 32.5 mm. Obverse with bust of Charles IV [sic] above Nov.1808* within legend FERDINANDUS * VIII * HISPANIE [cedilla] ET AMERICE [cedilla] REX and rosette within sun; reverse with forest above river FLUV.ATRATO. within legend PROCLAM * IN ZITARENSI PROV * A JOS * MAR * VALENCIA and rosette; diagonal-grooved edge. Lightly toned, with scratches on bust and a few rim-flaws but of course the main damage is the plugged hole at top, yet this issue (probably struck in Popayán) is so rare that this is one of only two known to exist in silver, the other being the previous lot. Citará (here as Zitará) was the original name of the city of Quibdó on the Río Atrato, which terminates in the Gulf of Darién. Note: NGC erroneously labeled this as Herrera-22. Pedigreed to the Celso Isla Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of April 2021, lot 137) and the Breogán Collection (Aureo auction of October 1998, lot 501).
