COLOMBIA, Zitará (Quibdó), 4 reales-sized proclamation medal, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1808, extremely rare, NGC MS 62, ex-Nueva Granada, Restrepo Plate. Restrepo-24 (p. 130, this piece); Herrera-unl (cf 92 in gold); Medina-unl (cf 407 in gold). 32.5 mm. Obverse with bust of Charles IV [sic] above Nov.1808* within legend FERDINANDUS * VIII * HISPANIE [cedilla] ET AMERICE [cedilla] REX and rosette within sun; reverse with forest above river FLUV.ATRATO. within legend PROCLAM * IN ZITARENSI PROV * A JOS * MAR * VALENCIA and rosette; diagonal-grooved edge. Choice green-gold toning over luster (the reverse darker). This issue, probably struck in Popayán, is so rare that only two are known to exist in silver (the other, in fact, being the next lot in this auction). Restrepo's illustration of the present piece says "only one known in silver," with a unique example also known in gold referenced by both Herrera and Medina as "único ejemplar." Citará (here as Zitará) was the original name of the city of Quibdó on the Río Atrato, which terminates in the Gulf of Darién. Note: NGC erroneously labeled this as Valencia (in reference to the city instead of the person). Pedigreed to the Nueva Granada Collection (Sedwick Auction 29, lot 750) and plated on page 130 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012), both stated on label.
