COLOMBIA, Santa Cruz de Mompox, cast 4 reales-sized proclamation medal, Ferdinand VII (imaginary bust), 1808, extremely rare, PCGS XF details / repaired, finest known in PCGS census. Restrepo-14 (p. 130); Herrera-78; Medina-381. 33 mm. Obverse with imaginary bust of Ferdinand VII within legend [rosette] FERDINANDUS.VII.REXHISPAN. [rosette] ETIND• with last N in retrograde; reverse with tall cross between two palm branches on a mound within legend [rosette] PROCLAMATUSMOMPOX.IND. [rosette] with [rosette] 1808. [rosette] below monogram for the region's Alférez Real Gabriel Martínez Guerra. Somewhat crude in design but with sharp details and light toning, just a few old marks and with fields typically chased (smoothed in its time) as seen on most cast proclamation medals (which PCGS considered "repaired"), acknowledged as one of the rarest Colombian proclamations of Ferdinand VII, missing in most collections and represented only as a drawing in all references including Restrepo. This example is visibly superior to the only other piece we know to have been sold in recent years (the Becerra Collection example in Sedwick Auction 36).
