COLOMBIA, Popayán, gold 10 pesos, 1870, repunched stars, extremely rare, NGC MS 62, finest and only example in NGC census. Restrepo-332.8; Sed-40; KM-141.3; Fr-103. 16.13 grams. Rich gold color, lightly toned in legends, with fabulous luster and sharp full details, particularly on Liberty’s portrait, a couple minor marks, slightly crude rims, and a prominent die crack at U of UNIDOS, which along with the re-punched stars (noted by NGC) match the dies of the other known examples, but overall incredible quality for a Popayán issue. At MS 62, this coin is the finest of just five known, consisting of the following:
1. PCGS AU 58 sold in Sedwick Auction 25 (May 2019)
2. PCGS AU 55 in the Eldorado Collection sold in Stack’s Bowers auction of January 2018
3. AU sold in Sedwick Auction 12 (October 2012)
4. The Banco de la República specimen plated in Restrepo (which also looks AU)
Rated RRRR by Dr. Frank Sedwick, this key date has long been recognized as of one of the foremost rarities in Colombian Republic gold.

As the final date of the Popayán 10 pesos type, the 1870 is part of the final chapter of a minting tradition rooted in Colombia’s colonial past. For more than a century, Popayán had refined and coined precious metals from the surrounding mining districts, continuing through the transition from Spanish rule to independent government. While the mints of Bogotá and Medellín continued into the time of Colombia’s current government, starting in 1886, the Popayán mint permanently ceased operation in 1880.
