COLOMBIA, Cartagena or Santa Marta(?), copper ¼ real, Ferdinand VII, no date (ca. 1815), rosettes at top and bottom, very rare, NGC AU 53 (EMO Collection Blue Label), ex-Norweb (Plate), ex-EMO (Plate), KM Plate, Restrepo Plate. Restrepo-102.1 (this coin); Cal-unl; KM-C1. Fairly well-formed flan with design somewhat reminiscent of the official silver issues from the Bogotá mint with lion on reverse, but instead of a castle and date the obverse shows NR and 1|4 and rosettes, which Restrepo could only narrow down to "Caribbean" mint (KM says Santa Marta), which could even include Maracaibo in modern-day Venezuela (but decidedly not "Nicaragua" as stated in the original Norweb catalog), this extremely well-pedigreed example with nearly full details and even some rim design in deep chocolate-brown color with traces of original color and luster around the lion. Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Christie's auction of November 1985, lot 714, plated in catalog) and to the EMO Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of January 2024, lot 51091, also Plate Coin 306.3 on page 109 of his book Spanish Colonial and Republican Cuartillos of the New World [2020]), also plated in KM's Standard Catalog references and on page 131 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012).
