COLOMBIA, Cartagena, "imitation cob" 4 reales, "888" date (1814), extremely rare, NGC AU 55, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Gibbs, Rosenman Plate. Restrepo-119.1; KM-unl; Cal-1029. 7.91 grams. Broad flan with full cross containing transposed lions and castles, L to left, nearly full pillars with very bold "date" 888 (each 8 made of two separate ringlets) and M to left, partial L at top, lightly toned with some flat areas as usual but no doubling and overall extremely choice for this difficult issue of which Restrepo posits only about five are known, this being the finest for sure. Pedigreed to the Howard D. Gibbs Collection (stated on label) and to the Hans M.F. Schulman auction of March 1966, lot 1040, also plated on page 45 of Rosenman's Imitation Cobs of Venezuela and Colombia (2006).
