COLOMBIA, Cartagena, gold cob 2 escudos, 1628/7, assayer E below mintmark RN to right, crosses inside, dots outside tressure around cross, very rare, NGC AU 58, finest known in NGC census, ex-McGregor. Restrepo-M52.10; S-C7; Cal-unl (Type 376); KM-unl (4.4 for type); Fr-2a. 6.67 grams. Very rich gold color without luster, very bold full date with traces of 8/7 overdate, the full cross and shield also quite bold as is the denomination •II• to left, most of mintmark-assayer to right, small spot of extra gold (as made) above shield. On his certificate, Flemming calls this "By far the finest known two escudos of the entire Cartagena RNE series 1626-29." Pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label), with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2015.
