COLOMBIA, Cartagena, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, assayer H below denomination VIII to right, mintmark RN to left (1626), extremely rare. Restrepo-M45.1; S-C3; KM-3.4; Cal-unl. 27.06 grams. Clear RN to left of full shield with doubled but certain VIII above full assayer H to right, the slightly doubled cross also full, with castles and lions in proper quadrants, VF with contrasting toning and light old scuff on shield. There are three known 8 reales with assayer mark H, which stood for the same Juan de la Era representing the rest of Cartagena’s shield-type coinage up through 1635 with assayer mark E, just with his name initially misconstrued as Hera on the first issues in 1625-6. The earliest example, sold in Sedwick Auction 38 as lot 919, shows a 1622-style shield, notably including the inescutcheon of Portugal on the upper half, and a cross die that matches 1622 issues as well but with what looks like a 1625 date, the year Juan de la (H)Era arrived at the mint. The second one, pictured in Restrepo, bears a clear date 1626 but does not show the assayer (due to doubling), yet its obverse die matches the current lot exactly, which means we can safely ascribe this coin to 1626.
