COLOMBIA, Cartagena, cob 1 real, Philip IV, assayer H below denomination I to right (1625), mintmark RN to left, very rare, NGC XF details / environmental damage, finest and only example in NGC census. Restrepo-M18.1; S-C2a; KM-A5; Cal-671. 3.13 grams. Very bold full shield with equally bold RN to left and I-H to right, king's ordinal IIII in legend, the choice cross-lions-castles also full and bold but with date off the flan, nicely contrasting toning over faintly porous surfaces and encrustation in crevices, old scratches in crown. Coins of this brief assayer H (Juan de la Hera) are represented by a single 2R and a seven 1R, with all but one of the latter a die-match with the present example, a few with visible date 1625, all except this lot originating from a single hoard found by Clyde Hubbard and cataloged by Robert Nesmith in 1958. This issue bears the distinction of being the only other Colombian type to bear the escutcheon of Portugal in the upper half of the shield besides the first issues of 1621-22.
