COLOMBIA, Bogotá, large copper medal, dated 1828 (struck 1829), Bolívar saved from assassination, unique in this metal, NGC MS 63 BN, finest and only example in NGC census. Urdaneta Braschi-I.A.12 (for silver). 28.85 grams. 44 mm. The only specimen known in copper (XRF tested at 93%), an off-metal striking of a medal normally encountered in silver (about twelve to fifteen known) and rarely in gold (about two known), a rare and historically important medal. Obverse with bust of Bolívar right, set atop a pedestal; reverse with all-seeing eye within radiant pyramid above L.D.P. / SALVO LA VIDA / DEL LIBERTADOR / SIMON BOLIVAR / LA NOCHE DEL 25 DE SEP. / DE 1828. Well preserved, with faint blue hues and highly reflective surfaces that provide outstanding eye-appeal despite a few edge-cracks, no doubt due to the greater hardness of copper. Until recently, this rare and celebrated medal, commonly known as the Septembrina in reference to the September assassination attempt, was believed to have been produced in Venezuela, as stated on the NGC label (which also calls this piece bronze instead of copper). However, a presentation by Carlos Bacalao at the 2019 NUMISCOL convention in Bogotá demonstrated that the medal was in fact made in Colombia, and that its dies are preserved in the Museo Nacional de Bogotá. Furthermore, forthcoming scholarly articles have linked the meaning of L.D.P. to a Masonic lodge, consistent with the symbolism of the all-seeing eye in a radiant pyramid, rather than the traditional attributions to La Divina Providencia or to Bolívar’s aide L. D. Palacios.
