COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 8 escudos, 1753, assayer S (Sebastián de Rivera) below denomination 8 to right, mintmark FS to left, Royal-like strike, NGC AU 55, finest and only example in the NGC or PCGS censuses, Plate Coin in Calicó, Ponterio-Pedraza, Gutiérrez, Tauler, and Restrepo (last two stated on label). Restrepo-M98.14 (this coin); S-B27a; Cal-35 (this coin); Tauler-626 (this coin); KM-26; Fr-11. 27.00 grams. An exceptional Bogotá 8 escudos distinguished by its extraordinary roundness, unusually complete strike and remarkable clarity of the date and principal design elements. Broad and nearly perfectly circular flan with a beautifully centered crowned shield, bold F-S mintmark arrangement to left and a particularly clear denomination 8 with assayer S below to right. The reverse displays a remarkably complete and well-centered Jerusalem cross within tressure, with strong interior devices, extensive peripheral legend and a notably clear date for the issue. The combination of symmetry, centering and completeness gives this piece a pronounced "quasi-Royal" appearance, highly unusual among regular Bogotá cob 8 escudos.

The surfaces are especially attractive, with a beautiful, rich, yellow-orange original patina that enhances the depth of the devices and gives the coin a warm, completely natural appearance. Only limited peripheral weakness is present, leaving an exceptional amount of the original design visible on both sides.
Beyond its striking appearance, this coin possesses an extraordinary pedigree and publication history. It has passed through the cabinets of several important collections, and we have been able to trace its documented history back to 1936, when it first appeared in the numismatic record in the Lonja del Almidón (Madrid) auction of March 30, just before the Spanish Civil War effectively ended major coin auctions in Spain for many years. Next it appeared in Calicó's 1953 landmark work Aportación a la Historia Monetaria de Santa Fe de Bogotá, and over the following decades the same specimen was repeatedly selected for illustration and census work by leading specialists, making it one of the best-documented individual Bogotá cob 8 escudos of the period. Pedigree and publication history: Plate Coin in F. Xavier Calicó's Aportación a la Historia Monetaria de Santa Fe de Bogotá (Colombia), Barcelona, 1953, p. 75, no. 35; illustrated as coin SF C8 FVI 53 #5 in Ponterio and Pedraza's "The Cob 8 Escudos Struck in Colombia at the Santa Fe de Bogotá Mint: A Comprehensive Study and Census," published in Numismatics International Bulletin, December 2006 (a copy of which accompanies this lot); Plate Coin 626 in Rafael Tauler Fesser's Oro Macuquino, 2011, p. 144; Plate Coin M98.14 in Jorge Emilio Restrepo's Coins of Colombia, 4th ed., 2012; illustrated in Ignacio Gutierrez Delgado's Los Doblones de a Ocho Escudos, 2024, Vol. I, p. 305; pedigreed to the Lonja del Almidón (Madrid) auction of March 30, 1936, lot 995; the UBS Auction 63 of September 6, 2005, lot 4508; and the Áureo & Calicó "Oro Macuquino" auction of December 2013, lot 76.
