COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 8 escudos, 1746 (S), very rare, NGC AU 53, finest known in NGC census, ex-Lasser, Restrepo-Lasser Plate. Restrepo-M84.6; S-B27; Cal-2259; KM-24; Fr-6. 26.96 grams. Impressively broad, thick flan with exceptionally bold full cross-and-tressure and shield, hint of denomination 8 and mintmark F to left (assayer S to right not visible) but peripheries otherwise flat save for the two most important data—king's ordinal V (since he died in this year) and final 6 of date—all nicely toned on fields, with minimal marks, desirably pedigreed, overall an exceptional coin, combining strength of strike, elegant toning, and historical importance, the kind of coin that belongs in a refined colonial collection. Pedigreed to the Joseph R. Lasser Collection (Ponterio auction of January 2006, lot 414), also Plate Coin M84-4 on page 51 of Restrepo-Lasser's Macuquinas de Colombia (1998).
