COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, (inverted 1702 or 1704 over inverted 1702), assayer Arce (V.A.), Charles II transitional, Philip V on reverse with x's flanking ordinal, very rare, PCGS MS63 / 1715 Fleet, ex-Sedwick, ex-Lasser, ex-Fisher, Lasser-Restrepo Plate, KM Plate, Friedberg Plate, Treasures of a Lost Fleet II Plate, Arce Plate. ARCE-67 (this coin); Restrepo-M66.30; S-B11; Cal-1920 (under Ph. V); KM-14.2; Fr-4a. A beautiful example, extensively pedigreed, with choice full cross-and-tressure that is off-center just enough to show almost all of Philip V's name and ordinal, the shield also off-center but choice and with clear CA- for Charles II, pertaining to a chaotic transitional period of 1700-2 in which Philip's name was combined with that of the deceased Charles before the coins returned to just Charles alone in 1703, probable evidence of a cover-up related to a secret reduction in fineness. Unfortunately, the date is not visible on this coin, but from die matching we know it is either an inverted 1702 reading as "2071" inward from the edge, or 1704 (normal orientation) punched over "2071." Also not visible in the cross-side legend is assayer V.A before the date (presumably for Ventura de Arce), again confirmed by 1704 coins and one other known example of this "2071" die that was lot 179 in the original Real Eight/Christensen auction of October 1964. From the 1715 Fleet, with original Fisher photo-certificate PC8-31122, plated on p. 1319 of Dr. Frank Sedwick's article "In Search of Colombian Cobs (Numismatist, July 1985) and on p. 89 of Lasser-Restrepo's The Cob Coinage of Colombia (2000), pedigreed to the Lasser Collection (Ponterio auction of January 2005, lot 849, the catalog for which accompanies this lot) and to the Mel Fisher Collection, with his tag and photo-certificate PC8-31122, also plated in the KM Standard Catalog references and in older editions of Friedberg's Gold Coins of the World, and photographed and described as October 2019's "Treasure of the Month" on pp. 82-83 of The 1715 Fleet Society's Treasures of a Lost Fleet II (2022), and finally plated as coin 67(1) on p. 78 of Daniel Frank Sedwick's Arce's Doubloons (2025), stated on label.
