COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1640/39, assayer A below mintmark NR to left, very rare, NGC AU 53, ex-Santa Fe, Restrepo Plate (both stated on label). ANUN-8; Restrepo-M50.17 (this coin); S-B20; KM-unl (4.1 for type); Fr-2. 6.70 grams. Broad, oblong flan with choice full cross and shield flanked by clear (N)RA and II, but best part is the ample legend with most of king's name visible, displaying P's crafted from crafted from I's with small o's and the V as an upside-down A, plus very bold date that looks like 1649 but assayer A was long gone by that date, and note the 4 is punched over a retrograde 4, a very interesting coin overall, rather bright and butter-yellow in color, probably the finest (and only?) example at NGC but currently not yet posted in the census, in fact the only one known to us. Pedigreed to the Santa Fe Collection (Sedwick Auction 10, lot 25), also Plate Coin M50-17 on page 85 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012).
