COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1628 (struck in 1633), assayer A below mintmark NR to left, mule, very rare, NGC AU 50 / Mesuno Hoard, ex-Santa Fe, ex-Gray, Sedwick Plate. ANUN-2; Restrepo-M50.3 (this coin); S-B17; KM-unl (cf 4.1); Fr-2. 6.67 grams. Same dies as the previous lot (a very rare muling of a 1628 Pinto 1 escudo reverse with a 1633 Anuncibay obverse, four known), this example with full 28 of date and full NRA above king's ordinal IIII, trace of upright denomination 2 to right, good full shield and cross-and-tressure, the latter in a distinctively early style (like the 1626 Cartagena issues), oblong flan with streaks of reddish-purple toning from its time under the water, desirably pedigreed. From the "Mesuno Hoard" (ca. 1636) and pedigreed to the Santa Fe Collection (Sedwick Auction 10, lot 20), also to the Thomas Gray collection (displayed at the ANA Money Museum's "Treasures of the Deep" exhibit in 2014-15), and Plate Coin in Sedwick's The Practical Book of Cobs, 4th edition (2007), as stated on label.
