COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold bust 8 escudos, Charles III ("rat nose" bust), 1770 VJ, rare, PCGS AU58, finest and only example in PCGS census, ex-Eldorado, ex-Norweb (stated on label). Restrepo-71.20; Cal-2093; KM-41. Superb bold strike with choice luster and rich gold color, with remarkably great definition on the iconic “rat nose” bust, some denticles of the rims off the flan due to a slightly off-center strike, the surfaces all clean and problem-free except for one small area of coppery encrustation around the X of REX. This coin also bears an admirable pedigree dating back to Norweb, inspiring the cataloger for the Eldorado sale to say that its “condition and provenance are unimproveable.” It remains the sole graded coin at PCGS, with the finest in the NGC topping out at AU 55. Pedigreed to the Eldorado Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of January 2018, lot 11172) and to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 350).
