COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold bust 8 escudos, Charles III ("rat nose" bust), 1769 JV, extremely rare, NGC MS 62, finest known in NGC census, ex-Eldorado. Restrepo M71.14; Cal-2090; KM-41. 26.96 grams. Exceptionally lustrous, with choice full portrait details and clear JV assayer initials, as opposed to the relatively less rare single-assayer V for this year, the surfaces so pristine that the fields exhibit original die-polish lines, albeit with a few wispy surface hairlines that do not detract from the strong original luster or overall freshness of the coin, the rims only slightly incomplete due to trivial centering issues.

The presence of die cracks in the legends combined with faint die buckling, yet with fresh die-polish lines, suggests that the dies failed relatively early in their working life. It is quite possible that only a very limited number of 8 escudos were struck before the dies were discontinued and replaced with the single-assayer successor (which is also characterized by oversized digits 69 in the date), possibly explaining the extreme rarity of this JV variety.

In any case, the 1769 JV is one of the great rarities of the Nuevo Reino 8 escudos series. Restrepo recorded only two examples, while Calicó (in La Onza) described the issue as “only a few specimens known,” and an earlier specialist auction catalog characterized it as “rarísima.” We can trace five examples, of which three are in the NGC census (and none at PCGS): the present coin in MS 62, a second in AU 55, and a third in AU details. Pedigreed to the Numismatica Ars Classica auction of March 2002 (lot 277) and to the Eldorado Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of January 2018, lot 11168). Missing in most collections.
