COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold bust 8 escudos, Charles III ("rat nose" bust), 1766 JV, rare, PCGS AU58, finest and only example in PCGS census, ex-Eldorado, ex-Diaz Lascano. Restrepo-71.8a; Cal-2085; KM-41. Choice, well-centered, and well-detailed strike with complete rims, sharp full details in the distinctive early “rat nose” portrait of Charles III, rich gold color with tinges of red, considerable remaining mint luster in the protected areas, light even friction on the highest points and only minor scattered contact marks, the finest at PCGS and bettered by only two at NGC in low MS grades, also nicely pedigreed. Pedigreed to the Federico Diaz Lascano Collection (Schulman auction of May 1969, lot 168) and to the Eldorado Collection (Stack’s Bowers auction of January 2018, lot 11163).
