COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold bust 8 escudos, Charles III ("rat nose" bust), 1762 JV (no dot), rare, NGC XF details / obv scratched, ex-Trastámara (stated on label). Restrepo-71.1a; Cal-2079; KM-41. Rare and important first year of the Charles III 8 escudos from Bogotá, introducing the distinctive young “rat nose” portrait as opposed to the carried-over bust of Ferdinand VI, this example rather well struck for the issue, with fully detailed central elements, bold legends and date harboring traces of luster, rich gold color, and nearly full rims despite inexact centering, with a short scratch to right of date as noted by NGC. Many major collections, including Karon, Eliasberg, Caballero de las Yndias, Norweb, and Ortiz, lacked this date. Also note this is the even rarer variety with the JV assayer lacking a dot in between the letters. An important opportunity for the Colombian specialist or Latin American trophy collector. Pedigreed to the Trastámara Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of October 2014, lot 818).
