COLOMBIA, Bogotá, cob ½ real, 1666 no assayer (Ramos), Charles II, rare, NGC XF 40, finest and only example in NGC census, Calicó Plate. Restrepo-M54.1; S-B7a; KM-A8; Cal-191 (this coin). 1.27 grams. Typically small, thick, sharply cut flan with nearly full Philip IV [sic] monogram, nice but off-center cross (proper quadrants) with 100% complete date 1666 (very rare to see on a Bogotá cob ½ real), richly toned all over. One of the distinctive idiosyncrasies of the Bogotá mint is its use of the Philip monogram on all cob ½ reales, even as late as the 1720s when their production apparently ceased, meaning that Charles II issues like this one are really only recognizable as such when either the date or the king's name and/or ordinal appears in the legend, neither of which is common. While the other New World mints did not reflect Charles' accession until 1667 or even 1668, we know from other 1666 issues that Bogotá changed their dies in favor of the new king in that year. Plate Coin on page 228 of Aureo & Calicó's 2019 edition of Numismática española.
