COLOMBIA, Bogotá, cob 8 reales, 1622, assayer A to right, mintmark RN to left, no pomegranate under escutcheon, ex-Atocha (1622), Blanton Plate. Restrepo-M42.1; S-B1; KM-3.2; Cal-1534. 17.13 grams. Very broad, thin flan with very choice full cross-and-tressure (well-detailed castles and lions) and choice full shield (very slightly doubled), much legend including full date, also nicely toned, just rather underweight from corrosion, still quite eye-catching for its width alone, and well pedigreed. Twenty years ago this issue was considered Philip III and struck in Cartagena, but research by Blanton (see pedigree article) and Jorge Proctor have shown it was struck in the name of Philip IV at the Bogotá mint (somewhat corrected in more recent references). From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher tag 85A-236095 (certificate missing), pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 379) and Sedwick Auction 22 (lot 274), and plated in Herman Blanton's article "Argument to Re-Classify Colombian Philip III 8 Reales to Philip IV" in the November 2007 issue of NI Bulletin (a copy of which accompanies this lot).
