COLOMBIA, Bogotá, cob 4 reales, 1622, assayer A to right, mintmark S to left, no denomination, extremely rare. Restrepo-M33.1; S-B1; KM-2.1; Cal-1134. 8.53 grams. Very few are known of these first-issue, no-denomination 4 reales struck from Madrid-made die-punches, its mintmark S no doubt for Santa Fe de Bogotá before the local decision to use NR for Nuevo Reino instead, with all examples believed to have been lost in a sample shipment on the 1622 Fleet. Though dark and corroded, all of the elements identifying this rarity are present, with a clear S mintmark to left of partial shield, assayer A to right, and parts of all four digits of the date readily visible on the reverse edge. Likewise, the king's ordinal is visible on the obverse legend as well as -RVM (RUM) in the reverse legend. A great opportunity to acquire a rare and important issue. From the Atocha (1622), with original pre-1986 cardboard holder hand-marked 3030 (registered in the Fisher database in 1985 as 3030-3, certificate missing).
