COLOMBIA, Bogotá, cob 2 reales, 1647 R, rare, PCGS VF25, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Eldorado, ex-Ponte, Nesmith Plate, Restrepo Plate (stated on label), Calicó Plate. Restrepo-M28.21; S-B6; KM-6.1; Cal-940. 6.87 grams. Well centered on a broad planchet, with clear bottom half of 16 and full 47 of date outside of complete cross-castles-lions, also bold full shield with R of mintmark above king's ordinal IIII to left and denomination-assayer •II•R• to right, attractively toned over smooth surfaces, thin edge crack, also an extensively pedigreed coin whose chain of ownership can be traced to its original discovery in the 1950s. From a hoard discovered by Clyde Hubbard in Medellín in the 1950s and subsequently published by Robert I. Nesmith, plated as coin 3d on plate XXIX and in a line drawing on p. 518 in his 1958 article, "A Hoard of the First Silver Coins of Nuevo Reino de Granada (Colombia)"; also Plate Coin on page 73 of Restrepo's Coinage of Colombia (2019); and Plate Coin on page 175 of Aureo & Calicó's 2019 edition of Numismática española; pedigreed to the Eldorado Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of January 2018, lot 11071) and to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
