COLOMBIA, Bogotá (Cundinamarca), 2 reales, 1819 JF, struck over a Caracas, Venezuela, "imitation cob" 2 reales with fantasy date "741" (early 1800s), very rare, PCGS VG10, Rosenman Plate (stated on label). Restrepo-139.1; KM-unl (host C13.2). Typically uneven and slightly off-center strike with messy interiors that mostly show the host details (including, significantly, the fantasy date "741") surrounded by some bold legend, particularly the AMERICANA, date 1819, denomination 2R, and assayer J•F, all lightly toned. As presented in Rosenman (to whom this coin is pedigreed), this issue was ordered directly by Simón Bolívar just eleven days after the Battle of Boyacá in 1819, specifying that "Caracas coinage of low fineness be restruck with the 'India' die [referring to Antonio Nariño's profile of a native woman in headdress on obverse]," in an effort to alleviate a severe shortage of circulating silver coinage after the war, when independence became permanent after the Spanish Royalist re-occupation in 1817-18, during which no republican coinage was struck. Beginning in 1819, the legend was revised to identify the issuer as the United Provinces of New Granada rather than solely the Province of Cundinamarca (Bogotá). This particular example, while a bit worn, is nevertheless desirable for its clear details and also for its important pedigree. Pedigreed to the R. Rosenman Collection, plated on page 62 of his book, Imitation Cobs of Venezuela and Colombia (2007).
