CHINA, Kwangtung, Tientsin mint, 1 dollar, Year 3 (1911), without dot after DOLLAR, extra flame, one chopmark, ex-Peterson/Brandenburg/Blakeney. KM-Y31; L&M-37; Kann-227. 26.74 grams. Rare provenance to a World War II Japanese transport ship sunk on December 30th, 1942 in Simpson Harbour off Rabaul during a bombing run by B-17s of the USAAF 43rd Bomb Group. About AU with no corrosion though dark around the edges and surface hairlines from post-salvage cleaning, small chopmark on reverse, quite lustrous with blue and golden toning hues. Recovered by former Smithsonian curator Dr. Mendel Peterson and acquired by Gene Brandenburg (with small certificate), also pedigreed to the Ray Blakeney Collection. Recovered from: Tomiura Maru, sunk in 1942 off New Britain, Papua New Guinea
